Things to do around durango
Between Colorado’s largest wilderness system “The Weminuche”, covering over half a million acres just minutes from downtown Durango, and some of the world’s best mountain biking, rafting, climbing, fishing, and canyons, the list of things to do is endless.
Weminuche Wilderness From Durango there are several access points to the wilderness area, with the easiest being purgatory flats across from Durango Mountain Resort. Chicago Basin is the most popular destination within the wilderness, with access to three 14'ers. Moab, Utah Canyon Country is 3 hours from Durango with Moab being a great base camp. Access to Canyonlands and Arches National Park is just minutes from Moab, and some of the best rafting, mountain biking, and hiking in the country can be found nearby. Rafting There is some great rafting in Durango and the surrounding Four Corners area. Check out 4 Corners Whitewater and Mild to Wild in Durango for some pretty affordable day trip prices in season. 14ers Everybody wants to climb a 14er while in Colorado and Durango is a great base camp to make that happen. There are a handful within a couple hours drive around Durango. El Diente, Mt. Eolus, and Mt. Wilson are just a few hours outside of Durango. Please ensure you are checking local weather before embarking on one of these peaks. Mesa Verde National Park Home to thousands of archaeological sites including ancient cliff dwellings of the Ancestral Puebloans, Mesa Verde was established as a National Park in 1906. The nearest access point is just west of Mancos, CO on HWY 160. Festivals Summertime in Colorado is festival time. In and around Durango, there are several festivals in the summer ranging many genres. Telluride is about 2 ½ hours from town and hosts some of the most famous music festivals around. Many festivals have a volunteer option, offering free entry in exchange for a couple hours of light duty work. |

A one day pass is $7 or they offer month long punch passes.
